films 2014

How I live Now. It's because I like Saoirse Ronan, the only reason, honest.

Third Star. Nice music, nice scenery. Boys with feelings.

Inside Wikileaks. So, that's what happened. I see.

Boyhood. Ok, I get the amazing bit, the longterm project, watching actors grow older etc. but apart from that, a pretty bland life, a plain old story line, nothing much to tell.

Hannah Arendt. A must must must see, especially, the final speech.

5 Broken Cameras. A must see.

Saving Mr Banks. Benign. Pleasant family entertainment. With little Colin and all.

August Osage County. Lots of really good ACTING. But, whoo, nasty, nasty.

Cold comes the night. Gritty.

Tracks. My kind of movie. Reading the book was even better.

Captain Phillips. Nah.

Breakfast on Pluto. Too much Neil Jordan is not a good thing. But he certainly knows how to round up all the familiar big names.

Rendition. Is where Meryl Streep is nasty.  And the free world is a bad place.

What Richard did. Masterful. The real lads - the ones the story is based on - got off scott free, though.

Philomena. Sad. Sad. Sad. I know her, she is a composite of so many Irish women.

Blackthorn. I love Sam Shepard.

Brothers. Jim Sheridan tries his hand on the remake of an excellent Danish film. Pity about the U2 soundtrack, totally wrong.

Wir sind die Neuen. Memory lane. I pity today's students. We had such a great time.

The Wolf of Wall Street. Well, fuck this. And while we're at it, fuck that, and that and that. What the fuck. It's all just a fucking fuck up. Fuck.

Nebraska. Found out what a compressor looks like, at last.

The Portrait of a Lady. Has John Malkovich ever not played the villain?

The Disappearance of Alice Creed. A compact little thriller.

Gasland. Fracking is evil.

The Stories we tell. Sarah Polley is so smart and has a wonderful family.

The Dallas Buyers Club. Reminded me of the loss and anger and isolation during the early 1980s when HIV came to Ireland.

American Hustle.  How easy it is to fake and cheat. But in the end it's all about hair.

Mud. Huck Finn sort of.

Die andere Heimat.  Yes, there was a time when poverty and injustice forced German people into emigration. Edgar Reitz knows how to show this in stunning and beautiful detail.

Twelve years a slave.

Oh Boy. Spending two years thinking about life is not a bad idea.

La Grande Bellezza. Age will catch up with all of us. Nice music, fabulous images.

Cloudstreet. The best. The very best. Stunning images. Gorgeous Kerry Fox.

Inside Llewyn Davies. Great send up, lovely music.

Eltern. Ja. So kann's sein. But not always.

The kids are alright. Ok, so it's nice and mildly funny but would it be such a big deal in a society where gay people are just people? Where we need not make a fuss about sexual orientation?

Nothing Personal. This is a good movie. I felt cold and damp at times but then I remembered how gorgeous Connemara is on sunny days with no wind.

The Way Way Back. Is way way awful, despite beautiful Maya Rudolph.

Enough Said. Nice and stuff. Nothing special.

The Counselor. Convoluted and complicated or maybe I am just not devious enough to get it.

Filth. Don't be fooled by the funny bits, this is a sad story.

Barbara. These two actors are so beautiful.

Frozen Ground. It's really cold in Alaska.

Black Fish. We humans, we are so ignorant, so stupid.

The Act of Killing. Impossible to watch to the end. Cold cruelty beyond your wildest imagination.

The English Surgeon. I cried a bit, so humbling.

Promised Land. This could have been such a good and important movie. But no, it's all mushy music and a love story.

The World's End. There are tiny glimpses of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but only just. My first and last zombie movie, I swear.

The Place Beyond the Pines. Long. Pretty ok. My nephew thinks it's tops. I was half expecting Sam Shepard to appear.

Starlet.  What little there is to life. How much loss and boredom. I almost felt pity.

The House of Myrth.  Scully is the damsel in distress.

About Time. Mildly funny. But Bill Nighy, ahhh, he is as wonderful as ever.

The Broken Circle Breakdown. The saddest thing ever.

Contagion. Wash your hands, for crying out loud!

In the House. Riotous black French comedy with English subtitles makes for a fun evening.

The Namesake. Nice novel, nice film.

No 2. Just trying to imagine what NZ suburbs are like.
