These flowers all look strong and well-nurtured, but then who would want a garden full of rickets sufferers? This year, more than any other, I have had to take more responsibility with the result that all the stuff I've planted gives the impression that life has been a struggle. True the sweet peas have eventually embraced the wickerwork obelisk but only after a series of agonising visits on my part, seeking to empathise. I'm not sure I've been bred for empathy.
On hot evenings we sit at the patio table, drink cooled white wine and contemplate our labours. I tend to fidget, reminding myself of time spent working with that most unrewarding medium - earth. To compensate I come up with what can only be described as artificial happiness - that our neighbours aren't the Trumps or the Erdogans.

some I recognize, some I don't. but I love the potatoes! I didn't grow potatoes this year but I did last year. had so much fun digging them up.
