I don't have an actual union card any longer. The last one looked like a credit card and I had it tucked away somewhere with my work papers. It's all online now but I left the last union I was in when I retired.
The first union I joined was the German Education Union, which organises educators and teachers in schools, universities, early childhood education, vocational training and adult education.
I joined because my father had urged me to do so. Also, a cousin and various other family members and I had grown tired of the discussions as to why not and so on.
It was the time when I was a student and trainee teacher and I remember lots of action but mostly fun. And learning workshops on all sorts of stuff. The union financed the interrail tickets that enabled me to travel all over Europe during the summer, visiting festivals and doing voluntary work in many different settings (mixing cement for school renovations, chaperoning youth groups, serving coffee to old age pensioners, cleaning hospital floors, replanting beach grass at the coast, you get the idea). And along the way, I met the man I am still sharing my life with.
When I moved to Ireland and worked in bookshops, I joined IDATU, the Irish Distributive and Administrative Trade Union, which then was the trade union representing workers in Ireland. I wasn't an active member, not someone who went to meetings and such, but when in 1984, several female workers and one man at Dunnes Stores, one of Ireland's large department stores, refused to sell South African grapefruits as part of the growing campaign against the Apartheid regime, my union branch decided to follow and soon enough, there were pickets all over the country where I spent many hours, my small kid asleep in the buggy or playing with others between our signs and banners.
This guy tells the story quite well and almost like a joke:
I found out a bit later that my name, together with all other IDATU members, was on a list of people barred from South Africa at the time. When we moved to Germany, I dutifully joined the next best union and paid my membership fees and helped distributing newsletters from time to time, collected signatures on petitions and funds for people in need. I had nothing to worry about but I had my rep's contact details and the knowledge that any time any place I had the legal protection of my rights at work - as well as being part of a collective muscle for lack of a better word.
A while back, during one of my father's family dinners, the above-mentioned cousin was explaining to another guest why he, now a well off retired academic, had always been a union member. It's because I never wanted to lose my sense of solidarity, always wanted to remind myself what social responsibility means and why it matters. But also, because I can.
I belonged to a union for as long as I was a nurse. I just found out today, listening to the radio, that Alberta has the lowest number of unions in the country. We also just had one union, the teachers union, ordered back to work, with the contract they voted against and no legal recourse. There is talk of a general strik in the province, who knows if that would happen. I would support it.
ReplyDeleteUnions are about all of us standing together, supporting each other. I think that's the important of them. All of us need help sometimes.

ReplyDeleteI've never been a union member, but I support unions wholeheartedly. Florida, where I grew up and worked as a young person, was a "right to work" state, where union membership was strictly voluntary if it was even available. (And it wasn't in most places.) My employer in New York was a union shop, but my position was outside the bargaining unit so I couldn't join even if I'd wanted to. Here in the UK we have national unions representing private school faculty and staff but again, I've never joined -- I guess at my age and career stage I haven't seen the need. Perhaps short-sighted in the grand scheme of things.
ReplyDeleteYes to that last quote. As a retired educator, I belonged to a union for over thirty years. Last month, our provincial government forced that union back to work using a loophole in our Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms. IYAM, unions aren't perfect and sometimes feel unnecessary, but then, politicians or corporations get too powerful and bam...it seems to me all unions continue to be necessary because they have democratic values at their core and they've improved all our lives. Yes to democracy at the core of labour.

ReplyDeleteAppreciate this post, Sabine. Long ago, when I worked as a sewing machine operator in a factory, I belonged to the Garment Workers Union and was union representative for a short time. That Woody Guthrie song came to mind.
Having never been employed where union membership was available, no unions for self employed artists, I have never been a member of one but I fully support their existence.

ReplyDeleteTrade unions play a significant role in German social democracy, not just due their constitutional right to collective bargaining. They remain the main players in setting and defending workers' rights as well as wages and working conditions.
DeleteCodex: I was not clear; the science/medical sector often doesn't have a union. So there is none to join.
DeleteThat's most unfortunate. The unions here representing medical staff have been quite effective regarding working conditions. Most of the researchers are employed in federal institutions, universities et al., and are thus public service employees with strong protection and bi-annually negotiated salaries - via collective bargaining.
DeleteCodex: It depends on the field. Nurses have powerful unions. Depending on University and State so do some academics.
DeletePhysicians do not, there are just some useless associations. Over the last decades 100 hour work week, shortage of specialists, no Nachwuchs as a result. If you find this info useful I can explain in more detail, but for physicians I think it's the same everywhere.
